I haven't posted for ever on here first post on townhall I did about an issue. The issue is Walter Williams and his article saying victors rewrite history. Well that is there right. Germany denied being part of the nazi reign after world war II which there evil machine was crushed. History can be a myth agreed on. Williams was sympathetic to those who fought for the Confederacy.
He talked about Black soldiers that fought for the confederacy. Saying it was not about slavery but the right to secede. And saying Davis was not going to overtake Washington anymore than George Washington wanted to overtake London. True they wanted to secede and not take over Washington. But there was a diffrence. They were already states while this country was still colonies. We gave Phillpines there independence and if Puerto Rico desires will give them theres. They are not states. The union won so can do what they want.
Of course Slavery was not the main issue of the civil war but slavery ended in this country probably about 50 years earlier than it would of without the civil war. Main thing was about states rights if they could secede. The reason the Southern states seceded was because of an antislavery president who wanted to preserve the Union. They seced because they wanted to keep the institution of slavery going on and north didn't. Lincoln had troops down at Fort Sumter and Southern forces fired on them.
IF someone was in the military or served in Congress and fought for the South than they violated the oath to defend the constitution of the Unites States. That is treason. Robert E Lee was against secesion but felt loyalty to state was more important than loyalty to nation.
For slavery the US placed a leading role in ending it in the americas though it still goes on in other countries. But many blacks owned slaves as well as Indians. Some slaves may have fought for the Confedaracy too. Felt they had a right to secede.
If the Confederate would of won I wonder how many diffrent states there would be or just the North and Southeast. We would not be the country we are if they would of won. I doubt slavery would still be legal in Confederate states. But good thing as a result of subsequent wars the Union won. We are the Country we are because of the Union victory. Would the Confederate be a superpower we are or would the Unites States?
I agree with Walter Williams on many ideas economically but he was wrong to sympathise with the Confedaracy.
